Scourge (Skyrim)

Scourge (also known as Mackkan's Hammer, Bane of Daedra,[1] the Daedric Scourge,[2] or Scourge, Blessed of Malacath)[3] is a legendary Daedric artifact. It was forged from sacred ebony in the Fires (or Fountains)[3] of Fickledire,[2] and is associated with Malacath.[3] It is a fierce weapon, and takes the form of a steel or ebony mace. Malacath dedicated it to mortals, and any Daedra who attempts to invoke its power will be sucked into a voidhole and banished to the Outer Darkness of Oblivion's voidstreams.[1][4][5] It also has the ability to banish them to Oblivion with a single blow,[3] and can summon Daedra such as Dremora and Scamps from Oblivion to do the wielder's bidding.[6] The summons are said to be those that it has previously "killed", and its victims are said to be poisoned.[7]:241 It has been described as a "bold defender of the friendless",[3] which could be related to Malacath's role as the Daedric Prince of outcasts.[1]

History[edit]

Scourge was once used by Mackkan, who banished many of Mehrunes Dagon's minions with it.[3] The blessing of Scourge was mentioned within the rings allegedly gifted from Malacath to the Brutal Breed cult after the fall of Orsinium around 1E 1000.[8]

Second Era[edit]

The last living dwarf, Yagrum Bagarn, at one point befriended the sorcerer Divayth Fyr.[9] At Fyr's behest, Yagrum Bagarn wrote a book[7]:241 from the notes that he gathered over the centuries, listing Scourge among various items of "unimaginable significance".[2] By the Interregnum, copies of this book under the name Tamrielic Artifacts circulated throughout Tamriel, providing some general information on the artifact to its readers.[10]

Third Era[edit]

The mace eventually came into the possession of the Third Empire and was hung in the armory of the Battlespire. The Imperial Battlemages of the Battlespire used it against the Daedra Lords in the name of the Emperor.[2][3]

In the aftermath of Dagon's invasion of the Battlespire during the Imperial Simulacrum, the hidden mace was recovered from the Caitiff section of the Battlespire by an apprentice and used to help fight back against the retreating Daedric forces. A Daedra named Wonshala Keriayn was interested in obtaining the mace in return for a piece of the Battlespire's shattered voidguide, but when she tried to invoke the weapon's powers with the keyword 'Equality', it banished her to the Outer Darkness.[5] Scourge survived the ensuing destruction of the Battlespire, and was returned to Tamriel, where it now wanders the land with adventurers.[2] Yagrum's Bagarn's book would be updated and go under the name Tamrielic Lore, and would change Scourge's entry to mention the events that transpired in the Battlespire.[2]

By 3E 427, the mace once came into the possession of Divayth Fyr, who kept it in Tel Fyr, a Telvanni wizard tower in Morrowind's Zafirbel Bay. The Nerevarine obtained the item while adhering to Divayth's strange hobby of allowing his collection to be pilfered under certain circumstances.[11]

Fourth Era[edit]

Circa 4E 201, the mace was in the possession of Valkyn Gatanas, a powerful Dremora serving as one of Mehrunes Dagon's invasion leaders, who used a pair of magic-negating gauntlets to wield the weapon. After the defeat of the general, Scourge was retrieved by the Last Dragonborn.[12]

Notes[edit]

  • In ESO, Scourge is depicted on Malacath's banners. With its flanges, Scourge resembles an axe at certain angles. Interestingly, Malacath is also depicted with an axe that is reminiscent of Scourge's side profile via the Orsinium Relief, Malacath, and the Malacath's Wrathful Flame item.
